Everything on paper should be clear before you join. It is hard to fix later.
The contract
- Read the whole contract before signing and keep a copy.
- Wages, payment interval, overtime, leave, contract length and who pays for the trip home should be clearly written.
- Ask about anything you do not understand before signing. Show it to someone you trust, or to an expert.
Insurance and social protection
- Find out which insurance applies in case of illness or accident.
- Save the emergency contact details of the company and the insurer.
- Check your social security obligations in your home country.
Money planning
- Bank account: make sure the account that will receive your wages is open, working and in your name.
- Regular support to family: ask whether you can have part of your wages sent regularly (allotment).
- Bills: set up automatic payments for cards, rent and utilities.
- Power of attorney: consider a limited one to someone you trust, if needed.
Red flags
Leaving without seeing the contract, signing a blank paper or being asked for a placement fee is never acceptable.
