Day of the Seafarer: Why 25 June Matters

The Day of the Seafarer is observed every year on 25 June. It was established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to recognise the contribution of seafarers to world trade and to the global economy.

Why it matters

The vast majority of goods travel by sea. Food, fuel, medicine and raw materials reach their destinations because crews work day and night, in every kind of weather, often far from home.

Ways to mark the day

  • Say thank you to a seafarer you know. Send a message to a shipmate or a family member at sea.
  • Share experiences in the forum: tips for newcomers, memorable voyages, lessons learned.
  • Support seafarers' welfare organisations with time, donations or awareness.
  • Talk about seafarers' rights, including fair contracts, timely wages and safe conditions.

Every day counts

Recognition should not last one day. Seafarers deserve respect, decent working conditions and access to support every day of the year.

To every seafarer reading this: thank you for what you do.
