When approaching a port you talk to the port authority, VTS (Vessel Traffic Service), the pilot and the tugs. The sentences below are examples in SMCP style.
Requesting entry
- "Request permission to enter port." (You are asking to come in.)
- "What is your ETA?" (When do you expect to arrive?)
- "My ETA is 1430 UTC."
- "Proceed to anchorage." (Go to the waiting area.)
- "Keep clear of the fairway." (Stay out of the main channel.)
With VTS
- "Report your position."
- "Report when you pass Fener Light."
- "Vessel traffic is heavy in the area."
- "Advise your intentions." (Tell us what you plan to do.)
Pilot
- "I require a pilot."
- "Pilot boarding place is..." (The position where the pilot comes on board.)
- "Rig the pilot ladder on the port side."
- "Pilot ladder is ready."
- "Pilot on board."
Tugs
- "Tug is fast forward." (The tug is connected at the bow.)
- "Push / Pull."
- "Stop pushing."
Warning
Even with a pilot on board, the Master remains responsible for the ship's safety. If an order is not clear, ask again.
