Maritime Myths and Facts · часть 4

There are countless sea stories. Some are exaggerations, others are surprisingly real.

Myth 1: "Rogue waves are just sailors' tales."

Fact: Extreme waves (rogue waves) have been scientifically observed. Recorded measurements and ship reports show that they are real. They are rare, but they exist.

Myth 2: "You can drink seawater, it is just salty."

Fact: Drinking seawater makes thirst worse. The salt level in seawater is higher than the kidneys can remove in urine, so the body loses water. In an emergency, do not drink seawater.

Myth 3: "Ships disappear in the Bermuda Triangle more than anywhere else."

Fact: Official sources such as insurers and coast guards have stated that they found no unusually high loss rate in the area. It is a busy region with changeable weather.

Myth 4: "Seasickness never goes away."

Fact: Many people adapt within a few days. It varies from person to person. Fresh air, looking at the horizon, light meals and rest help. For severe or long-lasting cases, consult the person responsible for medical care on board.

Myth 5: "In a storm a ship is always in great danger."

Fact: Ships are designed to withstand heavy weather. The real risks are poor preparation and wrong decisions. Adjusting course and speed, securing cargo, reading the forecast and an experienced crew reduce the risk greatly.

Conclusion

The sea is powerful, but it is managed with correct knowledge and preparation.

General information only. Follow your ship's procedures on safety decisions.
