Every year, on the last Thursday of September, the world marks World Maritime Day — a day designated by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). It's not just another date on the calendar; it's a day set aside for the invisible heroes of world trade.
Why does this day exist?
Here's a fact that's not talked about enough: more than 90% of the goods in the world travel by sea. The clothes you're wearing, the phone in your hand, the furniture in your home, the fuel in your car — most of it spent time in the hold of a ship at some point. And what keeps that enormous system running isn't ports, terminals, or companies — it's the seafarers working watch after watch, months away from their families.
IMO has marked this day since 1978, both to highlight shipping's role in the global economy and to make visible the real challenges seafarers face — long separations, fatigue, and safety risks among them.
What this means to us
When we started building Faroys, we kept coming back to one question: what would a platform genuinely look like if it made a seafarer's life easier? Every feature we've built — from job hunting to CV building, from sharing experience on the forum to tackling the internet-at-sea problem — was shaped by talking to people who've lived this profession's challenges firsthand.

If you're reading this on board, between watches, or during shore leave — know that the work you do is part of a much bigger machine than it might seem. Every day you spend away from your family is a day someone else walks into a store and finds the shelves full.
To the rest of us ashore: if you meet a seafarer, remind them of this day. A small "thank you" often means more than you'd think.
