The Istanbul and Dardanelles (Çanakkale) straits — together known as the "Turkish Straits" — are the only sea route connecting the Black Sea to the Mediterranean and the wider world. Being geographically narrow, winding, and heavily trafficked, they're considered one of the most challenging and tightly regulated strait passages anywhere.

Port culture

Passage through the straits is managed under Turkey's Traffic Separation Scheme, established under the Montreux Convention, along with continuous VTS (Vessel Traffic Service) monitoring. Ships give advance notice before transit and stay in constant contact with VTS throughout. Istanbul itself also hosts extremely busy local sea traffic — ferries, passenger boats — which demands extra vigilance from the bridge team.

Shore leave in practice

For ships simply transiting the strait, shore leave isn't really a question — the passage is completed within hours. But for ships anchoring off or calling at Istanbul, the crew can reach the historic city center (Sultanahmet, Galata) relatively easily; Istanbul's public transit and ferry network is well developed.

What to keep in mind

  • Strong currents and sudden weather changes during the strait passage are well-known risks; full concentration from the bridge team is required.
  • Heavy traffic can sometimes mean waiting your turn for passage, done at designated anchorage areas.
  • Istanbul's historic character and variety make it one of the most popular shore leave stops among seafarers — but if time is tight, it helps to plan priority sights in advance.

This article is general information; strait passage rules and VTS procedures should be confirmed with official sources (Turkish Coastal Safety, etc.).
