Port by Port 6: Fujairah

Fujairah is the only emirate of the UAE with a coastline directly on the Gulf of Oman rather than the Persian Gulf — which makes it strategically unique: a port reachable without transiting the Strait of Hormuz. That position has turned Fujairah into one of the world's largest bunkering hubs — many ships stop here purely to refuel.

Port culture

Fujairah's port traffic is largely focused on bunkering, anchoring, and transit — many ships sit at anchor here for hours or a few days, taking on fuel and provisions at open anchorage without ever berthing at a formal terminal. So the "port experience" is often less about going ashore and more about waiting and replenishment operations offshore.

Shore leave in practice

If a ship does berth at a formal terminal, shore leave is possible, and Fujairah city itself is compact and accessible. But for ships bunkering at open anchorage, going ashore usually isn't on the table — for the crew, the port experience is largely limited to the supply crews arriving by boat or barge.

What to keep in mind

  • Regional temperatures are extremely high in summer (over 40°C); watch for heat exhaustion during deck operations.
  • Spill-prevention and fire safety protocols during bunkering are standard and must be followed carefully.
  • Given the proximity to the Strait of Hormuz, regional geopolitical tension can occasionally affect voyage planning — keep an eye on current advisories.
