Boatswain (Bosun)
- The supervisor of the deck ratings.
- Distributes and supervises the work received from the Chief Officer.
- Manages mooring, anchoring, deck maintenance, painting and rope work.
- An experienced bosun who shares knowledge is a young seafarer's best teacher.
Able Seaman (AB)
- A certificated, experienced deck rating.
- Keeps watch: steering the ship (helmsman) and acting as look-out.
- Plays an active role in mooring, anchoring and deck work.
- Earned through sea service and training.
Ordinary Seaman (OS)
- The entry level of the deck ratings.
- Helps with maintenance, painting, cleaning and mooring work.
- Learns by doing and prepares for Able Seaman.
Cadet
- A trainee who is studying to become an officer.
- Applies knowledge learned in school and on board.
- Keeps a record of sea service.
