Ships that transit areas with a security risk follow guidance from the company, the flag State and industry best-practice documents. The exact measures depend on the area and the current threat assessment, and the Master and Company Security Officer decide them. Here are general principles that apply widely.

Prepare before entering

  • Voyage risk assessment with current information from official sources.
  • Ship Security Plan reviewed and understood by the crew.
  • Communication checks: reporting procedures, contact numbers and emergency messages.
  • Drills: rehearse muster and safe-room procedures.

On watch

  1. Extra look-outs and a proper radar watch, including small contacts.
  2. Log and report suspicious approaches according to procedure.
  3. Keep access controlled: lighting, locked doors, gangways and ladders.

Human factors

Fatigue and stress reduce awareness. Make sure rest periods are respected, even in high-risk areas. Confirm that everyone knows their role.
