The Good Sides of Seafaring · Part 3

In many shore jobs, staying at the same title for years is normal. At sea, progression is tied more directly to documented experience and examinations — someone who works properly and accumulates the right certificates and sea time can climb the ranks at a relatively predictable pace.

That doesn't mean it's easy money — quite the opposite, it's the return on real effort put in under demanding conditions and long contracts. But where that effort goes is often clearer than in many shore careers: certificate plus sea service plus exam equals progression.

Because work periods and leave periods are clearly separated, your spending opportunities are also limited while you're on contract — one reason many seafarers find it easier to save than their shore-based peers.

A genuine employer gives you this progression without charging you for it — see our myths and facts series.
