Two relatively new, specialist areas in the maritime industry: alternative-fuelled ships and polar waters.
IGF Code Certificates (STCW V/3)
For crew working on ships that use gases like LNG/LPG as fuel (not as cargo, but to run the ship's own main engine):
- Basic IGF Certificate: Minimum requirement for everyone working on this type of ship.
- Advanced IGF Certificate: For officers and engineers directly responsible for the fuel systems.
This is different from LNG tanker certificates — on an LNG tanker, gas is the cargo; under the IGF Code, gas is the ship's own fuel (for example, some container ships, ferries).
Polar Navigation Certificates (STCW V/4)
For ships navigating Arctic or Antarctic waters:
- Basic Polar Code Certificate: For all officers with bridge watchkeeping duties.
- Advanced Polar Code Certificate: For those who will serve as Master or Chief Officer in polar waters.
Covers navigation in ice conditions, cold-weather operations and polar-specific emergency procedures.
Why it matters
Both areas are growing in global trade — the shift to LNG and the opening of Arctic passages are increasing demand for seafarers holding these certificates.
