Seafarers' Welfare: Where to Find Support in Port

Life at sea is demanding, and port stays are short. Welfare organisations exist to help seafarers with everyday needs and with real problems.

What support is available?

  • Seafarers' centres: in many ports they offer free Wi-Fi, transport, a place to relax and sometimes simple shops.
  • Helplines: confidential lines that seafarers can call about mental health, unpaid wages or abandonment.
  • Chaplains and volunteers: visit ships, listen and help arrange services.
  • Unions and legal support: guidance if your contractual or MLC rights are not respected.

How to use them

  1. Ask the ship's agent or your officers which centre serves your berth.
  2. Save helpline numbers in your phone before you need them.
  3. If something serious happens, such as unpaid wages, unsafe conditions or abandonment, write it down with dates and contact a welfare organisation or your flag State.

Give back

Many centres run on donations and volunteers. If you can, share your experience so others know what to expect.

You are not alone at sea. Support exists; it just helps to know where to look.
