Working on tanker vessels (oil, chemical, gas) requires additional safety training — because the cargo carried can be flammable or hazardous. These certificates fall under STCW V/1-1 and V/1-2.
Basic training

These three trainings are the minimum requirement for every rank (from Master to ratings) working on the relevant tanker type. They cover cargo properties, hazards, basic safety precautions and emergency procedures.

Advanced training is required for officers and the Master directly involved in cargo operations (covering loading/discharge planning, tank cleaning, inert gas systems and similar topics).
Who needs which?
- Deck/engine ratings (general duties like cleaning, maintenance): basic training is usually sufficient.
- Watchkeeping officers, Master, Chief Engineer: basic + advanced training expected.
