There is no hospital on a ship. Medical facilities are limited and reaching shore may take days. That is why preparation before you go matters.
To do
- General health check: besides your valid seafarer medical certificate, consult your doctor about any chronic conditions.
- Dental check: toothache at sea is one of the most common and most difficult problems. Have a dental check before a long contract.
- Eyes and glasses: bring spare glasses or lenses.
- Vaccinations: complete any required vaccinations in good time.
Personal medication
- Bring enough for the whole contract, plus a little extra.
- Carry medicines in their original packaging, with a prescription or a doctor's letter. Some countries and ports restrict certain medicines.
- Keep the name, active ingredient and dose written in English.
What to declare
Do not hide a condition that affects your medical certificate or could create a risk on board. In an emergency, this information can save a life.
Mental health
Plan how you will cope with being away for a long time: regular call times, hobbies, books or films.
