Connectivity at Sea: How Internet Access Changed Seafarer Life

Not long ago, contact with home meant a weekly phone card or a letter waiting at the next port. Today many ships offer crew internet access, and it matters a lot for morale.

Why it matters

  • Regular contact with family reduces isolation.
  • Access to news, education and job information helps career planning.
  • Telemedicine and remote support can be safety-critical.

Common challenges

  • Data limits and cost: many ships give a limited allowance per crew member.
  • Slow speeds and outages in some regions.
  • Cyber risks: phishing and unsafe links target seafarers too.

Good habits

  1. Use messaging apps for daily contact, and keep video calls for special moments.
  2. Download large files in port when the connection allows.
  3. Never share passwords, PINs or card details by chat or email. Genuine companies never ask you to pay for a job.
  4. Keep enough time offline for rest and real conversations onboard.

Good connectivity should be part of a decent working environment. Ask about crew internet policy before joining a ship.
