Myth 1: "Containers never fall into the sea."

Fact: Every year, thousands of containers are lost overboard due to bad weather, poor stowage or lashing failure. That's why stowage plans and lashing rules are strictly enforced.

Myth 2: "Loading order doesn't matter, cargo just goes wherever it fits."

Fact: Loading is computer-planned based on stability, trim and stress calculations. Incorrect stowage can cause the ship to capsize or suffer structural damage.

Myth 3: "Bulk cargo is just coal and grain."

Fact: The bulk cargo category is very broad — ore, fertiliser, cement, even some liquids fall under it. Each type is subject to different handling/ventilation rules.

Myth 4: "The cargo manifest is a formality nobody reads closely."

Fact: The manifest is a critical document for customs, safety and dangerous goods checks; false declarations can lead to serious penalties.

Myth 5: "Only the Master is responsible for cargo damage."

Fact: Responsibility is shared between the owner, the charterer, the shipper and sometimes the terminal, depending on the contract terms.

Conclusion

Cargo operations are far more technical and rule-driven than they appear — one mistake can trigger a chain of consequences.

This article is general information; for a specific cargo operation, refer to company procedures and international codes (IMDG Code, IMSBC Code).
