The Second Engineer runs the actual day-to-day operation of the engine room — while the Chief Engineer handles planning/administration, the Second Engineer manages the work on the floor.
Daily duties
- Directly managing and supervising main engine maintenance.
- Distributing work among the Third/Fourth Engineers and the engine ratings.
- Tracking spare parts and consumables.
- Preparing the watch schedule.
A typical day
Varies by ship, but usually works day work or a similar routine; doesn't stand watch but is hands-on in the engine room's daily work.
