Internet at Sea: The Problem and the Fix · Part 3

A video call squeezed into a limited data allowance or a short window near a coast needs to be planned differently from a call on unlimited internet ashore. A few small adjustments can make that limited time much more valuable.

Before the call

  • Agree on a shared time reference. Instead of juggling "your time" and "my time," pick one shared reference both sides use (e.g. "8 PM Turkey time") to avoid confusion.
  • Keep a short mental agenda. To avoid burning limited connection time figuring out what to talk about, jot down the important things beforehand — a child's school update, a bill, a decision that needs making.
  • Tell your family what kind of connection to expect. A heads-up like "my signal might be weak this week, we may switch to voice only" reduces disappointment during the call.

During the call

Lowering video quality while keeping audio clear cuts bandwidth use significantly in most call apps — use a "low data mode" or similar setting if your app has one. If the signal drops, waiting a couple of minutes before redialing sometimes gives the connection a chance to recover on its own.

A small habit that helps

Many seafarers on long contracts set a fixed "call day" each week, which creates a shared rhythm and expectation on the family side too. Even when the connection isn't guaranteed, that rhythm is grounding — "we'll talk this weekend" is far more reassuring than "we don't know when we'll talk."

These are general practical tips; your ship's internet policy and bandwidth vary by situation.
