In the previous article, we explained why internet at sea is so difficult. Here, we talk about a solution that is actually in the seafarer's own hands — and why Faroys is preparing for it.
What is eSIM, and what does it do?
An eSIM is a digital line profile loaded onto your phone without inserting a physical SIM card. When you dock at a port or come within range of a terrestrial network:
- You can activate a local carrier's data line within minutes, with no physical SIM to find.
- You can use pre-built regional packages covering several countries.
- You can carry a second line without losing your original SIM or switching phones.
eSIM does not fix the open-ocean satellite problem — that's a different technology. But it makes it much easier and more affordable to get online quickly during port calls, shore leave, and short windows within terrestrial range.
Why is Faroys building this?
Because we know the need is real. Many seafarers on our platform, with just a few hours in port, are looking for a decent connection to call family, fill in a form, or simply check the news. We are building an eSIM offering in our store section for exactly this — it is not live yet, but it is in progress.
This isn't a magic product that solves everything. It is a realistic answer to a real need seafarers actually have.
