With thousands of lives at stake on passenger and Ro-Ro passenger ships, crew are required to have additional training. These certificates fall under STCW V/2.
Four core trainings
- Crowd Management Training: Managing passenger flow during an emergency evacuation — mandatory for everyone working on board.
- Crisis Management and Human Behaviour Training: Understanding and managing human behaviour in a panic situation — for personnel with senior responsibility.
- Passenger and Cargo Safety, Hull Integrity Training: Watertight doors, stability and hull integrity, for officers.
- Training for Personnel Providing Direct Services in Passenger Spaces: For service staff in direct contact with passengers (stewards, reception, etc.).
Who needs which?
Crowd management training is the minimum requirement for every crew member; the other three are added based on role — for example, an officer takes crisis management + hull integrity training, while a steward takes passenger-area service training.
Why it matters
The heavy loss of life in passenger ship accidents (such as Costa Concordia) is why these trainings were added to STCW — a trained crew saves lives in a panic.
