When approaching a port you talk to the port authority, VTS (Vessel Traffic Service), the pilot and the tugs. The sentences below are examples in SMCP style.

Requesting entry

  • "Request permission to enter port." (You are asking to come in.)
  • "What is your ETA?" (When do you expect to arrive?)
  • "My ETA is 1430 UTC."
  • "Proceed to anchorage." (Go to the waiting area.)
  • "Keep clear of the fairway." (Stay out of the main channel.)

With VTS

  • "Report your position."
  • "Report when you pass Fener Light."
  • "Vessel traffic is heavy in the area."
  • "Advise your intentions." (Tell us what you plan to do.)

Pilot

  • "I require a pilot."
  • "Pilot boarding place is..." (The position where the pilot comes on board.)
  • "Rig the pilot ladder on the port side."
  • "Pilot ladder is ready."
  • "Pilot on board."

Tugs

  • "Tug is fast forward." (The tug is connected at the bow.)
  • "Push / Pull."
  • "Stop pushing."

Warning

Even with a pilot on board, the Master remains responsible for the ship's safety. If an order is not clear, ask again.

These are practical examples. In real situations, follow port and VTS instructions.
