Before You Join Your Ship · Part 2

There is no hospital on a ship. Medical facilities are limited and reaching shore may take days. That is why preparation before you go matters.

To do

  1. General health check: besides your valid seafarer medical certificate, consult your doctor about any chronic conditions.
  2. Dental check: toothache at sea is one of the most common and most difficult problems. Have a dental check before a long contract.
  3. Eyes and glasses: bring spare glasses or lenses.
  4. Vaccinations: complete any required vaccinations in good time.

Personal medication

  • Bring enough for the whole contract, plus a little extra.
  • Carry medicines in their original packaging, with a prescription or a doctor's letter. Some countries and ports restrict certain medicines.
  • Keep the name, active ingredient and dose written in English.

What to declare

Do not hide a condition that affects your medical certificate or could create a risk on board. In an emergency, this information can save a life.

Mental health

Plan how you will cope with being away for a long time: regular call times, hobbies, books or films.

This article is general information and not medical advice. Discuss health decisions with your doctor.
