Maritime Myths and Facts · Part 6

These are the most asked and the most misunderstood questions about a career at sea.

Myth 1: "Seafarers get rich."

Fact: Income varies greatly with rank, ship type, company and experience. It is not the same for everyone, and generalising is misleading. Read the pay and conditions in your contract carefully.

Myth 2: "Seafarers are always at sea and never get leave."

Fact: Contracts and leave arrangements differ by company, rank and ship type. Periods of work and leave are written in the contract. Even so, being away from home is a real part of the job.

Myth 3: "There are no women in shipping."

Fact: Women at sea are few in number but present, and their numbers are growing. They work in deck, engine and service roles. Efforts to make the industry more inclusive continue.

Myth 4: "The sea is only for strong men."

Fact: Physical fitness matters, but modern shipping also demands technical knowledge, communication, attention and teamwork. Many roles depend on technical and organisational skills.

Myth 5: "You have to pay an agent to get a job."

Fact: No. A genuine employer or recruitment process does not ask you for a placement fee, commission or advance payment. Such requests are a sign of fraud. On Faroys, report these listings with the "Report" button; accounts that ask for fees are permanently removed.

Myth 6: "With certificates, a job is guaranteed."

Fact: Certificates are necessary but not enough on their own. Experience, references, language and health also matter. An up-to-date CV and accurate information are the best ways to stand out.
